TAG Heuer FAQs

Founded in 1860 by Edward Heuer, TAG Heuer evolved to become a leading and innovative luxury Swiss watch brand. By the early 1900s, TAG Heuer became a world leader in the chronograph watch, and the brand itself was synonymous with the sports watch. Crafting accurate timepieces to capture every second of sports events, TAG Heuer partnered with Formula 1, and mastered the world of motorsport watches. TAG Heuer engineered timepieces for other sports and purposes, but always with the same, legendary performance in mind. Today, a TAG Heuer watch is a must-have for sports enthusiasts, and its signature sporty aesthetic and renowned precision make it the perfect watch for every day, too.

TAG Heuer is a celebrated brand in the watch world, because of its standards of performance and precision. The watchmakers use only the very best materials, design, craftsmanship, and have been experts in crafting watches for over 160 years.

TAG Heuer watches are exceptional because of their unprecedented dedication to Swiss watchmaking, quality engineering, and highest functionality. TAG Heuer’s reputation and perception precedes them, and has done for decades. A TAG Heuer watch is a remarkable timepiece that’s set to last.

TAG Heuer watches are made in Switzerland, and uphold Swiss watchmaking features. TAG Heuer is a pioneering Swiss watch brand, and member of the LVMH group. This means that all TAG Heuer timepieces are subject to high Swiss standards in performance and precision.

Are TAG Heuer watches handmade? Some, but not all, parts of a TAG Heuer watch are manufactured by hand. TAG Heuer uses a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine to assemble intricate parts of a timepiece that achieve a level of precision that surpasses any handcrafted techniques. This includes cutting and drilling holes into the square plate of brass that the TAG Heuer ‘in-house’ movement begins as. Other parts of a TAG Heuer watch are made by hand, such as leather straps, which are delicately assembled by highly skilled craftsmen and women.

TAG Heuer watches are assembled with leading technology to produce an unparalleled level of precision and accuracy. The movements of a TAG Heuer watch are made completely in-house, which confirms the brand’s dedication to producing leading watches that are engineered to perform.

Delivering excellent Swiss precision is at the heart of every TAG Heuer watch.

TAG Heuer watches are waterproof to a certain extent, depending on the water resistance of your timepiece. You should always check the water resistance of your TAG Heuer before introducing it to water. The water resistance is measured in metres or bars, and alludes to how much water pressure your watch can endure at the said depth.

The water resistant features on your TAG Heuer are:

Screw-down crown: A screw-down crown doubly ensures water-resistance with an extra seal that becomes watertight when the crown is screwed down.

Helium-release valve: Available on 500m models, the helium release valve on TAG Heuer diving watches activates automatically when the difference between inner and outer water pressure reaches a critical level. The valve then releases the helium trapped in the watch case.

Take the following precautions before introducing your TAG Heuer watch to water:

  • Check the water resistance of your TAG Heuer watch, and make sure the water resistance on your watch has been tested within the last year
  • Ensure the crown on your TAG Heuer watch is fully pushed in (and depending on the model, screwed down)
  • TAG Heuer watches with a metal bracelet or rubber strap are best advised to be worn in water. Leather straps are to stay clear as they can be deformed/discoloured by water
  • After exposure to salt water, rinse the TAG Heuer watch in fresh water then dry it

Your TAG Heuer watch will tick if it is operated by a quartz movement. If your TAG Heuer watch is a mechanical one, the second hand should glide fluidly around the dial. A watch’s ticking noise is made by a quartz, battery operated movement, in which the second hand jumps from second to second around the dial. The second hand on a mechanical TAG Heuer watch should move in a steady motion, and not stutter or tick.

The majority, but not all TAG Heuer watches are automatic. Many TAG Heuer watches are mechanical, which means they feature a mechanical movement and winding feature; they will need to be wound in order to work. An automatic TAG Heuer watch is made up of a self-winding mechanical movement, meaning that it will self-wind due to the wearer’s general wrist movement. On the contrary, if your TAG Heuer watch is manual, it needs to be wound by the crown daily. Many TAG Heuer watches are automatic, this will be stated on the description of the watch.

For automatic TAG Heuer watches, the natural movement of your wrist when wearing your watch will wind the movement. However, if there isn’t enough movement, the power reserve will begin to drain and cause the watch to stop. You can wind it by tuning the crown – unscrewed or in neutral position – clockwise 40 times, which will give your TAG Heuer watch sufficient power reserve to function.

Watch winders are an efficient way of making sure your TAG Heuer watch is fully wound. Our WOLF products have a range of watch winders to keep your automatic watch ticking, so you don’t have to. We also offer a free WOLF watch winder when you purchase a TAG Heuer watch.

For non-automatic mechanical TAG Heuer watches, this type of movement needs to be wound every day. Winding is complete when you feel the crown resisting. Be careful not to overwind as this will damage the mechanism.

Quartz watches are operated by a battery movement. The movement of a quartz watch is powered by the battery, which is driven and regulated by a quartz crystal and an electronic oscillator. Some, but not all TAG Heuer watches possess a quartz movement, meaning that, yes, there are some TAG Heuer watches that are battery operated. How long should a battery last in a TAG Heuer watch? Around 2 to 3 years, on average. Some TAG Heuer watches are fitted with an EOL (end of life indicator) which means that the second hand will start to jump every four seconds, instead of each second, to indicate that the battery is dying.

With frequent care, servicing, and maintenance on your TAG Heuer watch, your timepiece could last a very long time- even up to a lifetime. Swiss watches are the best in the world, so regular upkeep of your TAG Heuer watch will ensure that its remarkable movements and functions remain in perfect working order for as long as possible.

Your TAG Heuer watch is covered by the Limited International Warranty for 24 months from the date of purchase. This means that TAG Heuer will repair any problems with the functions of your watch that result from a manufacturing defect, free of charge. Taking regular care of your TAG Heuer watch and having it serviced often will result in it lasting as long as possible with minimal problems.

All TAG Heuer watches bought from Beaverbrooks are authentic, as Beaverbrooks are authorised TAG Heuer retailer. Unfortunately, for TAG Heuer watches bought from elsewhere, we can’t tell from looking at the model or serial number to authenticate it, as these can be engraved onto a counterfeit watch as well. If you are not sure about the authenticity of your watch, bring it into your nearest TAG Heuer stockist and one of our expert advisors can take a look for you.

To keep your TAG Heuer watch in good condition, it’s important to follow the correct watch care. Discover our Watch Care Guide for everything you need to know on looking after your timepiece:

  • Service your TAG Heuer watch every 3-5 years

  • Store your TAG Heuer watch properly when not wearing it; we recommend a watch box, winder, roll or leather valet tray

  • Check the water resistance of your TAG Heuer watch

  • Wind your mechanical TAG Heuer watch daily, but be sure to not overwind

  • Wear your TAG Heuer watch regularly and enjoy it!

A watch roll is great for those who travel a lot, whilst a watch box is perfect for storing either a singular TAG Heuer watch or your collection of watches. For any automatic timepieces, we recommend a watch winder. If you’re looking for something to home other things alongside your TAG Heuer watch (like jewellery, keys and your phone) then our new leather valet tray is perfect. Find out more details here.

What is the best way to clean a TAG Heuer watch? We recommend cleaning your watch every 2 to 3 months to maintain its appearance and keep it in good working order. Wash in slightly soapy water using a soft brush, and rinse and dry with a soft cloth. If you have any doubts about the water-resistance of TAG Heuer your watch, simply clean it with a soft brush.

TAG Heuer watches with straps in fabric, leather and alligator or python should not come into contact with water. After each exposure to salt water, rinse the watch carefully in fresh water then dry it with a dry soft cloth.

It depends on which sport you want to play, and which model of watch you’re wearing. All TAG Heuer watches are designed for intensive wear and are tested for impact resistance, but each collection is specifically designed with particular sports in mind. The TAG Heuer Golf is for golf, TAG Heuer Carrera is for motorsports, TAG Heuer Aquaracer is designed for marine sports and the TAG Heuer F1 for outdoor activities. However, the TAG Heuer Haute Horlogerie models are not suitable for sports.
